Miley Cyrus Celebrates 7th Anniversary Of 'Wrecking Ball'

Miley Cyrus is looking back at one of her most popular songs.

The singer made a name for herself as a serious musician by shrugging her Disney image with the release of her explicit party anthem “We Can’t Stop” in 2013, from her Bangerz album. Fast forward to a few months later, and the singer would return to carve another mark in pop culture history with her emotional, number-one hit “Wrecking Ball.”

Doubling down on the its piercing, vulnerable message, Cyrus shocked the nation by going completely nude for the track’s raw and racy visual, which shattered Vevo’s record at the time for the most views for a video in the first 24 hours of its release (with 19.3 million watchers).

Like the visual, the song has more or less made the 27-year-old a linchpin of pop music and — in case you didn’t know — today (August 25) marks seven years since “Wrecking Ball” released. Cyrus took to Twitter to celebrate the special anniversary with a reflection on art and gratitude.

“7 years of Wrecking Ball. My concept of time is completely askew. Feels like a lifetime ago... but somehow only yesterday,” Cyrus captioned a clip from the bold music video. “Thank you for all the support you gave me then and of course the love you’re continuing to show my art today. Forever grateful & inspired.”

Since dropping Bangerz, Cyrus has released several other music projects, including Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015), Younger Now (2017), and last year’s EP She Is Coming. The superstar recently signaled her forthcoming LP, titled She Is Miley Cyrus, with the release of her newest single “Midnight Sky.”

Stay tuned: Cyrus is set to perform the song live for the first time at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday (August 30).
