This trend is similar to 2024’s “destination dupe.”

'Detour Destinations' was coined in a recent travel trends report from Expedia.

They reported that 63% of travelers plan to include these lesser-known areas in their itineraries next year!

“Detour Destinations" are basically destinations within reach of more popular destination but provide a completely different experience.

Detour destinations don’t necessarily encourage travelers to skip popular tourist attractions.

Instead, the trend emphasizes balance — spending less time on your trip in oversaturated cities and more time exploring under-the-radar areas nearby.

People are prioritizing more meaningful and sustainable travel experiences. Detour Destinations are cheaper, your supporting local communities, and are diving deeper in the culture of that city with the locals.

I saw we give it a try!
